Hi everyone,

As you may know from my post back in May, sadly Aunty Sue passed away earlier this year. I just wanted to share this piece with you as this forum is mentioned (my dad got it wrong and called it Mr NVQ!).

Kind regards,

Katherine (Sue was Mummy Sue to me x)

Hello everyone,

My name is Katherine and I am Sue Skelton's daughter. I have to tell you that sadly, Sue passed away on May 15th. She had been diagnosed with advanced lung cancer in July last year, hence her many spells away from the forum. I'm not sure if she shared any of this with any of you, knowing my mum she probably kept it to herself.

Mum was very proud of her achievements in the social care field and was happy to help anyone with queries. She loved getting thanks and this forum was something she talked a lot about.

I'm not entirely sure who owns the forum but if anyone needs to contact me please do so at katherine.skelton@me.com

Hi kay988,

Focusing on strengths means thinking positively rather than negatively. Looking at what the individual can do rather that what they can't do helps you to keep them as independent as possible. This makes them develop positive self esteem and a will to make efforts to provide what they want for themselves.

Hope that helps

Hi Julz,

Under the Health and Social Care Act 2008 (Regulated Activities) Regulations 2010 and the Care Quality Commission (Registration) Regulations 2009 the Essential Standards state that staff must receive training. Health and Safety Legislation also tells you what training you need to do.

Hi  k8089,

Service focused means a risk assessment that is done with what is best for the setting rather than the individual at the centre of it. Person centred puts the individual at the centre of their own care and what they feel is best for them. Its about involving the individual, providing them with  information to make choices from and listening to them.

Hope that helps

Hi sophie-212,

Think about an individual with multiple conditions such as physical problems, speech or other communication problems, medical conditions such as epilepsy and so on.

They will need expert help for each of those disabilities/conditions.

You are being asked to explain the roles of those professionals.

For example social services or the health service might arrange for a speech therapist to work with the individual or a physio might be consulted to show the individual and their carers exercises that will benefit them.  Explain what they do.

Hope that helps

Hi  confused.com,

See this

You could use a blood sugar test for 5.2 and 5.3.

Hope that helps

Hi cherylW,

See here for the national strategy and framework

http://www.elderabuse.org.uk/Documents/Other%20Orgs/ADASS%20guide%20-%20SAFEGUARDING%20ADULTS.pdf

Go to your county's safeguarding board for your local context ie what they do.

Hope that helps

Hi confused.com,

Start by looking at the individual's file and care plan. Ask them, ask your manager and colleagues and speak to the key people.

Hi  confused.com,

See these

http://www.skillsforhealth.org.uk/about-us/news/code-of-conduct-and-national-minimum-training-standards-for-healthcare-support-workers/

http://www.nhsemployers.org/PlanningYourWorkforce/SupportWorkforce/regulation/Pages/Minimum-Standards-for-Healthcare-Support-Workers.aspx#1

You should have a policy and procedure to follow in your own setting.

Hope that helps

Hi samday,

The individual has the right to make their own choices and take risks. You cannot over rule them. Record your concerns and that the individual has been given information about the dangers and risks etc.

Hope that helps
