Hi carolajna873,

'Formal language system' basically means using words and grammar in a way that follows accepted rules.

Why might someone with learning difficulties not use a formal language system?

Why might someone who is in fear communicate their feelings by acting out (anger, withdrawal etc) rather than express their feelings in formal language?

Why does someone who doesn't like to complain use a formal language system to say "I'm OK" but communicate their true feelings through body language.

That sort of thing.

Hope that helps

Aunty Sue
