Hi taurus,

Imagine if you had a service user who doesn't speak or understand English. She has been given an information booklet about your setting and its in English. What would you think and what would you do? Or it could be a wheelchair user who has been refused access to a room that other service users can access. That sort of thing.

Hope that helps

Thank you Aunty Sue what do mean as 'setting'
As I am on a ward what else could be given for he/she to read.?

Obviously it has to shown we are not discriminating against the fact they can't speak English and that also we are respecting their right to know and understand and being treated equally and fairly, respecting their needs and chioces ?

As a way of dealing with it are we looking at an interpretor, asking a member of staff to explain who can speak that languge, seeing if I could get translated version of the internet. Speak to family, key workers.

is this right

Thanks Aunty Sue

Hi taurus,

The ward is your setting.

If the information (eg a booklet about the ward) is provided by your employer then it is something for you to challenge them about. This question is about seeing procedures, practices and information that you think discriminate against service users.

Your solution is a good one but you also need to make sure that your employers are aware that it is discrimination so that it doesn't happen again.

Hope that helps

Aunty Sue
