Hi scoobydoo,
See here:
http://www.scotland.gov.uk/Topics/Health/NHS-Scotland/non-medicalprescribing/nurseprescribing/drugs/whatnursesprescribe/classificationThe safe and secure handling of medicines in care settings requires appropriate policies, procedures and quality assurance systems to be in place. The legislation they must be based on are:
The Medicines Act 1968, as amended, which regulates the manufacture, distribution, import, export, sale and supply of medicinal products.
The Misuse of Drugs Act 1971, which controls the availability of drugs liable for misuse.
Other legislation would be the Health and Safety Act, COSHH and the Safe Handling of Medication Regulations. The Health and Social Care Act (Regulated activities) also requires certain standards for settings to be registered.
Poor practice could result in prosecution.
Hope that helps
Aunty Sue
