Any help will be hugely appreciated...describe the characteristics of communication that is not based on formal language systems? Maybe it's just me being a bit thick today x

Characteristics mean how a person, place or thing looked or smelled or tasted or behave: so this means things like the use of body language/hand gestures and facial expressions being very expressive or aggressive without involving words. Think about how you can tell when a person is uncomfortable when speaking to you (maybe lying about something). What are the characteristics of their body language? Probably shifty, fidgety - eye contact may be lacking - the police say a person has 'tells' in their body language which unconsciously give away how they are really feeling - over a period of time interviewing suspects, they become highly attuned to these little 'tells' which are really clusters of behaviour or the characteristics of lying (like running their hands up the back of their neck indicating a need to comfort themselves because they know they are in trouble over something!). Aggressive body language is characteristically tense and wound up. Excited body language is bouncy, happy, friendly and open.
