You could start by explaining the normal development of communication skills -

biological (vocal chords etc)

social/emotional development (how we learn how to communicate from our social/emotional environment eg cultural norms, relationships)

You could then explain the impact of other factors such as disability, abuse, emotional upsets (death of a loved one, loss of social role etc)
